Coaching For Clergy

Coaching for Clergy is a new program of CTC.  Selected clergy will be trained throughout the NW District of LCMS and Region 1 (except for Montana Synod) of the ELCA.  The first training session has been held in Oregon.

Why a coach?

Coaches have an important role in sport.

Ø      Coaches know the plays

Ø      Coaches have the necessary training

Ø      Coaches have played under many different conditions

Ø      Coaches are constantly aware of the “bigger picture”

Ø      Coaches know how all the parts fit together

Ø      Coaches know how each “play” works toward goals

Ø      Coaches relate to the team as a unit as well as to individual players

Ø      Coaches are not one of the players on the field but from the sidelines they support, guide and encourage the players

Why a coach for clergy?

Consultation to Clergy believes that clergy and other church professionals need coaches for many of the same reasons sports teams do.  Here are a few comments made by pastors about the importance of having a coach.

"They (pastors) need to learn boundaries and role definition and not to take responsibility for everything.  Coaching can help them process such goals."

"Pastors recive little or no feedback on how well they are leading.  This process provides that in a non-threatening manner."

"We (pastors) find ourselves in the midst of situations and relationships, sometimes blind to how our own family of origin is causing us to react, not seeing a bigger picture, not seeing resources.  A coach brings a presence from outside the family of oritin and the congregation."
